In my work as a school chaplain and pastoral carer, I have found that picture books are a valuable tool to encourage children to begin talking about their struggles. Animal stories and illustrations in particular remove barriers and make the children feel safe and willing to open up to an adult reading with them. Even children who have previously struggled to express themselves are able to connect with the illustrations and share about their own difficulties.
